The last championship game of the night was the Greek League Championship between Sigma Pi and The Pikes. Normally the Greek League title games are competitive, heated, and bring a lot of fan interest. Tonight was no different. The Pikes jumped ahead early with some great defense and took a 31-18 halftime lead. Sigma Pi battled back in the second half but fell short 49-39. I talked to Pikes player Steven Quast after the game to get his thoughts on his team’s victory. Steven said the reason his team won the title was because of “good ball movement, executed plays and good defense.” He didn’t name an MVP but said “It was a team effort”. Steven will celebrate a hard fought victory with his girlfriend, who was excited about the win. Steven said he learned a lot by playing with this team, but most of all he learned ‘they can overcome anything”. Congrats Pikes!

The Pikes- Greek Champions
The ‘Necks- Men’s Comp A Champs
The Men’s Competitive A Championship featured two excellent teams in The ‘Necks and The Other Guys. The ‘Necks moved the ball very well in the first half, very good team basketball. This helped them take a 37-31 lead at halftime. In the second half The ‘Necks continued with great team basketball. Everyone was putting the “necks” out on the line for each other. The final score was ‘Necks 67 Other Guys 43. I caught up with ‘Necks player Boris Cayemitte after the game. Boris said the reason his team won the championship was that “they have played together for a while. We got to know each of our skills. We stay focused and everyone does their job”. Sean Fichtel was tabbed the MVP because he made almost every basket he took and never quit. He pushed the hardest.” They will celebrate the win by going out to eat” When asked what he learned about his team this season, Boris replied, “I learned we play better together than I expected. We have a lot of people that like to control the ball, but we shared well. Congrats ‘Necks !

Dreams & Nightmares- Men’s Comp B Champs
The Men’s Competitive B Intramural Basketball Championship was a battle between The Godz and Dreams & Nightmares (D&N). D&N was turning steals into baskets in the first half but they couldn’t break loose from the Godz. That halftime score was 22-20 and stayed pretty close to the end. The Godz battled with some timely rebounding but could not handle D&N in the end as they fell short on the scoreboard 39-31. I interviewed D&N player Charles Cook to get his thoughts on his team’s victory. Charles said the reason his team won the championship was because of “Heart”. ” We were down at first and heart kept us in the game”. He could not name an MVP because he said it was ” a whole team effort”. The whole team plans to celebrate with a team dinner. When asked what he learned most about his team this season, Charles indicated that, “We didn’t give up. We came here to win and now we are champions.” Congrats Dreams & Nightmares!

Go for the Gusto- Co-Rec Comp C Champs
The Co-Rec Competitive C Championship was a matchup between the CSC Bison and Go for the Gusto. The entire game was intense and physical. Both teams could smell the cotton of the intramural champion t-shirt. It remained close until midway through the second half when Go for the Gusto pulled away with some great defense, including several steals. Go for the Gusto stole this one from CSC 56-41. I had a chance to interview Gusto player Zane Higgins, who talked about just winning the championship. Zane said the reasons they won the title this year was because of their “work ethic, teamwork, and their ability to stick together as a unit.” Zane felt the MVP for his team was Johnny Hibbert because “he hustles harder than anyone on the team”. How will they celebrate the win? Zane said they will celebrate with “kool-aid and cookies”. Somethings never change from childhood. When asked what he learned most about his team this year, Zane replied, “Sometimes you may not like them but they are your team and you have to stick with them.” That is some great advice! Congrats Go for the Gusto, Co-Rec Comp C Champs!

LAE Volleyballers after their 4v4 VB win
@WIUwomenshoops had a big playoff win vs the RECking Crew on Wednesday night taking the contest 69-44. @WIU used some great defense and ball movement to get the job done. Haley Jones (pictured) had this to say about her @WIUwomenshoops team. She described her team as “Fast”. Her team did have a whole lot of fast breaks and got some easy buckets. She highlighted fellow teammate Brittany Cassady for “hitting big 3′s in the second half” This team is comprised of graduate students in the sport management program and they managed this game very well. Congrats!
This week’s basketball highlight featured Swoosh Nation vs RECking Crew. This Co-Rec matchup saw a run-n-game type of game. Both teams were running but it was the RECking Crew that was hitting their shots. Tiara Cash and Taylor Gunby were proving that basketball is not just a man’s sport. The RECking Crew won pretty handily in the end 62-41. Captain Orentheo Wilson said the best part of the game was “working together as a team and having fun.” Congrats RECking Crew!
